Dune: Awakening Base Building Guide

Build Tall: Two-Tile Room Height Standard

The absolute first and most basic principle of good base design: construct your rooms at a minimum of two wall tiles in height.

Even though very few buildings like a medium spice refinery and large ore creator, for example it requires height, two-tiles high ensures compatibility with most higher-level crafting stations. It also improves aesthetics and allows for second-story or elevated storage platform designs without creating cramped areas. Vertical consideration from the start saves massive future aggravation.

Understanding Storage: Types & Best Choices

There are four primary storage container types in the game:

  1. Medium Storage Container – Uses plastinium and spice mélange
  2. Small Storage Container – Uses scrap
  3. Chest – Uses iron
  4. Aluminum Storage Container – Late-game favorite

Best Storage for Weight and Volume

  • Aluminum Container
    Capacity: 1,750 weight, 45 items
Highly efficient and obtainable once you progress into mid/late game.
  • Medium Storage Container
    Capacity: 3,500 volume, 100 items
    Excellent for larger guild bases.

While medium storage offers higher volume, the number of containers you can place per base is limited. Players often expand their claim size to accommodate more. However, aluminum containers strike the best balance of cost and capacity early on.

Organizing Logistics With Circuit Systems

One of the biggest time-savers in Dune Awakening is employing the game’s circuit system to store logistics automatically. Here’s how it works:

  • Input and Output Circuits: Place circuits into storage containers in such a way that the finished products sort themselves automatically into specific boxes. For instance, place storage containers close to crafting stations and configure those crafting stations for output of Circuit 7.
  • Vehicle Integration: Instead of a resource shortage in your attack ornithopter or buggy, right-click and open the vehicle inventory and transfer goods into a target chest. This allows mass transfers without constant micromanaging.

This system also supports dedicated crafting stations, i.e., a dedicated fuel cell production area, by connecting machines and containers with the same circuit IDs.

Smart Layouts: Flare Without Sacrificing Flow

When planning your layout, strike a balance between beauty and efficiency.

  • Rounded Walls & Table Formations: Half walls and curved segments help you create circular container arrangements. This design makes it easier to access storage while reducing collision issues found with large square tables.
  • Placement Precision: Ensure containers and pieces align exactly with the build grid. Misalignments can cause interaction bugs or clipping issues.
  • Square Formations for Space Efficiency: The most practical layout for high-density storage is a square layout. You can fit up to 6 containers in a compact area using clever angles—perfect for large-scale operations.

Water Production: Use Advanced Death Stills

Water is arguably the most vital late-game resource in Dune Awakening, especially when crafting high-end materials like plastinium.

  • Basic FM Death Still:
    • Power Cost: 200
    • Water Output: 25,000 per corpse
  • Advanced FM Death Still:
    • Power Cost: 350
    • Water Output: 45,000 per corpse

Despite the higher power requirement, the advanced still gives 80% more water per body, which significantly reduces corpse farming and processing time. You’ll also save on labor, since fewer bodies are required for the same water yield.

Upgrade Refining Structures

Upgrading your production structures dramatically reduces both resource usage and crafting time. Here’s what you should prioritize:

Medium & Large Ore Refineries

  • Large Ore Refinery Advantages:
    • Uses fewer raw materials per ingot (e.g., aluminum drops from 7 to 4)
    • Reduced crafting time (e.g., plastinium goes from 30s to 20s)
    • Requires 400 spice mélange—get it in multiplayer runs or spice grinding

This refinery is an enormous timesaver, especially when dealing with heavy and hard-to-transport materials like titanium.

Medium Chemical Refinery

This upgrade is essential for:

  • Faster Production Times
  • Lower Resource Costs:
    • Silicone blocks require 3 flower sand (down from 5)
    • Lubricants and cobalt paste cost less fuel and crystals
    • Medium fuel cells and steel require fewer resources

Silicone, needed in almost all late-game gear, becomes significantly easier to mass produce. Get the medium chem refinery as soon as possible.

Base Design Philosophy: “Walmart” Centralization

Function is way too important than Form. The “Walmart base” philosophy promotes a more centralized layouts where everything can be reached easily.

  • Reduces time wasted running around
  • Especially important for guilds with multiple members
  • Organize workstations and storage by activity: survival, weapons, chemistry, vehicle fabrication

For maximum efficiency:

  • Create a central staircase with access to all floors
  • Keep all crafting benches in one visible area
  • Categorize storage containers by item type (weapons, armor, healing, ammo)

Every second saved navigating your base is a second spent progressing.

Shield & Energy Planning

Shielding is critical but expensive.

  • Penta Shield: Requires 3 energy per tile
    A 9×9 shield = 81 tiles = 243 energy!

Instead of shielding entire walls, use small shield doors (3×3) at entry points to conserve power. Optimize your shield placements around landing pads and vulnerable chokepoints.

Aesthetic Tips For Dune: Awakening Base Building

Want a base that looks great and still functions efficiently? Use these visual strategies:

  • Symmetry and Shapes: Ramps, triangles, and rounded walls can create unique visual accents.
  • Experiment With Corners: Half ramp corners and wedge walls let you smooth out harsh edges.
  • Vertical Flare: Half walls and circular columns break up monotony in square bases.
  • Walkways and Antlers: Use antler decorations, tall ramp corners, and lip structures to personalize and beautify.

Don’t Forget the Cutaways

Upgrading your cutaways to Mark V or VI as soon as possible yields major benefits:

  • 250+ aluminum per mining operation
  • Obtainable outside of radiation zones (e.g., Edge of Acron)
  • Allows access to high-end gear and resources without crafting

The same goes for radiation suits and blueprint farming. Spend some time farming these and save yourself weeks of unnecessary grinding.
